Hit-and-Run Crash, Carjacking and Pursuit in Freeport Kills 5 People

 
FREEPORT, CA (February 12, 2023) – Monte Nunn, Faith Samuel, Curvontay Swygert, Izabelle Salaz-Stephens and Aahliya Mariah Garcia died in a hit-and-run crash in Freeport on Thursday.
 
The fatal crash happened around 5:40 p.m. on February 9, along Highway 160 near the Sacramento River. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, a Cadillac Escalade carrying six people went off the roadway and hit a tree on the river’s east bank. All five passengers were thrown from the car.
 
The driver, 28-year-old Cameron Garcia of Sacramento, then carjacked a black Volkswagen Passat and fled southbound on Highway 160.
 
Deputies tried to pull the car over, which led to a chase.
 
Garcia abandoned the car on Elk Grove Boulevard near the Valley Hi golf course. Deputies found him at the course’s east edge and took him into custody.
 
All five ejected passengers died in the crash. Nunn was 29, Samuel was 18, Swygert 16, Salaz-Stephens was 19 and Garcia was 17 years old.
 
The suspect faces several charges including on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, vehicle theft and others. Further investigation is underway.
