DUI Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Two Pedestrians on Hawthorne Avenue in Bloomington

 
BLOOMINGTON, CA (November 28, 2022)Mireya Cardenas and Gloria Cardenas were killed in a DUI hit-and-run crash in Bloomington on Saturday afternoon.
 
The fatal crash happened around 3:46 p.m. on November 26, along Hawthorne Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, 43-year-old Josue E. Navarro of Fontana was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Hawthorne Avenue just east of Palm Lane. For unknown reasons, he collided with a parked vehicle along the north curb of Hawthorne.
 
The impact pushed the parked car into three pedestrians who were walking on the sidewalk.

Thirteen-year-old Mireya died at the scene. Gloria, 40, was taken to a hospital where she later died. They were both residents of Fontana. Information on the relationship between the two victims was not immediately available.

The third pedestrian remained in the hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities later arrested Navarro on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, gross vehicular manslaughter, hit and run and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The crash is still under investigation. The CHP urged anyone with further information to contact Officer K. DeMartino at the San Bernardino CHP office at 909 383-4247.
