Maria Polanco Among 2 Dead in 2-Car Hit-and-Run Crash on Normandie Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA (May 22, 2023) — Maria Polanco was among two people killed in a high-speed hit-and-run accident on Normandie Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard.
According to Los Angeles police, the deadly high-speed crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Investigators confirmed that a white BMW exiting a drive-thru area of Burger Factory was hit by a white Jeep bearing down Normandie Avenue at speeds of 90 miles per hour.
First Responders arrived at the scene to use the Jaws of Life to free two occupants from the BMW. However, it was already too late. A 20-year-old woman — a USC student — identified by officials as Maria Belen Polanco died. Her companion also in the vehicle, a 21-year-old man, perished at the scene, as well.
According to witnesses, the Jeep driver tried to flee on foot despite bystanders chasing him down. Officers were able to arrest the suspect at his home.
Now, the suspect faces multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, as officers found alcohol in the Jeep. If anyone has more information, please call the Los Angeles Police Department.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of Maria Belen Polanco.
