CORONA, CA (April 11, 2021) – Police arrested 25-year-old Marcos Calderon after a fatal road race crash in Corona early Tuesday morning, April 6.

The crash happened around 12:42 a.m. on the eastbound side of 91 Freeway near Buchanan Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Calderon, a Riverside resident, was driving a Nissan Altima while a 19-year-old Corona resident was driving a BMW 550, both at more than 100 mph. The two parties were engaging in a speed contest, police said.

When the two drivers encountered slower traffic on the west end of Riverside, they lost control of their respective vehicles and veered off the freeway. Calderon’s car stopped in a parking lot adjacent to the freeway, but the victim’s BMW struck a tree and immediately caught fire.

As a result, the BMW driver died at the scene.

Police arrested Calderon on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, participating in a speed contest causing death and driving under the influence of alcohol causing death, the Riverside County jail log shows.
