Man Dies in Possible DUI Accident on Highway 101 in Paso Robles

PASO ROBLES, CA (July 7, 2022) — A man died in a possible DUI crash on Highway 101 near Spring Street on Tuesday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle accident happened around 7:04 p.m. For possible DUI-related reasons, a 2009 Dodge Charger driver bearing northbound at a high rate of speed began passing cars on the inside and outside of the shoulder lane.

Subsequently, the Dodge clipped a 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser before spinning into the median, where it struck a dirt embankment and became airborne. Following the impact, the Dodge came to a rest on its roof.

Soon after, emergency personnel responded to the scene and found a 54-year-old man driving the Dodge with fatal injuries. Authorities have yet to release his name.

The Toyota driver and his or her occupants reported no major injuries at this time.

Due to the nature of the crash, investigators believe DUI played a part in the accident. However, an ongoing investigation should confirm other outstanding details. Witnesses who would like to help the CHP can call the department.
