Man Killed in Police Pursuit at 16th Street and Potrero Avenue [Mission District, CA]

Driver of Stolen Car Crashes in Mission District Killing 1 Bystander and Injuring 3

 
MISSION DISTRICT, CA (May 26, 2023) – A man was killed when a police pursuit ended in a crash at 16th Street and Potrero Avenue in Mission District on Tuesday morning.
 
Around 10:00 a.m. on May 23, San Francisco Police Department officers responded to the area of Folsom and Mabini streets on a report of a carjacking. A suspect vehicle matching the description was located near Kansas and 25th streets. The vehicle led police on a pursuit.
 
The stolen truck then slammed into an SUV at the intersection of 16th Street and Potrero Avenue. The vehicles careened into a bus stop, where the truck slammed into four bystanders.
 
The four victims were rushed to a local hospital, where one of them died.
 
Authorities only described the deceased as a 58-year-old man.
 
The other three injured people were a 57-year-old woman, a 37-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman.
 
The suspect, a 57-year-old man, faces multiple charges, including carjacking, murder, driving without a license, resisting arrest, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and evading a police officer after causing bodily injury or death.
 
This fatal crash is still under investigation. Police urged witnesses to call them at 415-575-4444.
