Pedestrian Dies after Struck by Car on Highway 178 in Bakersfield

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 4, 2023) – A man was killed in a pedestrian accident on Highway 178 in Bakersfield Tuesday night on January 3.
 
The fatal accident happened just before 6:00 p.m. just east of Niles Street. According to the California Highway Patrol, 33-year-old Jajayra Silas was driving a 2019 Mercedes A220 westbound at approximately 60 mph when the conditions were cloudy. At the same time, the male pedestrian was walking southbound in the westbound lanes wearing dark clothing.
 
Silas struck the pedestrian, causing him severe injuries.
 
First responders found the victim’s body on the north shoulder of the westbound lanes. They attempted saving him, but he died at the scene.
 
Silas stayed and cooperated with authorities.
 
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to the CHP.
