Man Killed, Mark Shoemate Arrested in DUI Crash on 71 Freeway [Pomona, CA]

DUI Crash on 71 Freeway in Pomona Kills 1 and Sends 4 Others to Hospital

 
POMONA, CA (July 5, 2023) – A man died and Mark Shoemate was arrested after a DUI crash in Pomona Sunday evening on July 2.
 
The fatal crash happened around 10:00 p.m. on southbound 71 Freeway, just north of Rio Rancho Road. According to the Pomona Police Department, a flatbed tow truck was traveling northbound when it was struck by another vehicle. The impact caused the tow truck to jump the center divider into oncoming southbound traffic.
 
The tow truck then collided with a family in a minivan going southbound.
 
A man inside the minivan suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
 
Four other people were taken to hospitals for treatment of unspecified injuries.
 
Shoemate, a 33-year-old man from Aliso Viejo, was the driver of the vehicle that struck the tow truck. Police arrested him on suspicion of felony drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter.
