Man Killed, Louis Sweet Injured in Head-On Accident on Highway 4 [Murphys, CA]

Head-On Crash on Highway 4 in Murphys Kills 1 and Injures 6

 
Murphys, CA (July 24, 2023) – A man was killed in a head-on accident on Highway 4 in Murphys Thursday afternoon on July 20.
 
The fatal accident happened around 3:30 p.m. near Utica Powerhouse Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the Bakersfield man was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry westbound on the highway when he drifted onto the shoulder. He then veered across the oncoming traffic lane.
 
The Camry then collided head-on with a Toyota Tundra, driven by Louis Sweet of Sonora.
 
As a result, the Bakersfield man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Two of his passengers were injured and transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
 
Meanwhile, Sweet sustained moderate injuries and was also taken to Memorial Medical Center.
 
Three juvenile passengers in Sweet’s vehicle had minor injuries and were released to family members.

CHP officials said fatigue and/or distracted driving may be a factor in the crash. Alcohol or drugs did not play a role.

Further investigation is underway.
