Copper Thief Fatally Struck by Driver on 55 Freeway in Tustin

 
TUSTIN, CA (October 3, 2023) — A man involved in a theft was hit and killed by a car while fleeing from police on the 55 Freeway near 1st Street.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly pedestrian accident happened Monday. Around 11:25 a.m., a suspected copper wire thief spotted officers at the scene. Subsequently, he decided to ditch his shopping cart of copper and hop over a fence onto the 55 Freeway. However, as the 32-year-old Santa Ana man bolted across the freeway lanes, a driver struck him near 1st Street.
 
Due to the crash, the suspect passed away from his injuries. Authorities closed all lanes for half an hour before reopening the three right lanes around 1:00 p.m.
