PERRIS, CA (January 31, 2023) — A man was injured and rescued from a mine shaft near Olive Street and Reed Street Thursday.
 
According to the Riverside County Fire Department, a call came in around 12:15 p.m. about a man being trapped. Shortly after, firefighters responded to an area near Gavilan Hills to learn that an excavator was digging around in the abandoned shaft but suffered an unclear head injury.
 
Upon locating the victim, firefighters extricated him from the mine and a Sheriff’s STAR-9 helicopter crew airlifted him to a regional trauma center for treatment.
 
It’s unclear what happened in the abandoned mine, but an investigation should confirm more details.
