Street Vendor Dies after Struck by Allegedly Stolen Amazon Truck in South LA
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA (February 20, 2022) – Jose Rangel died after struck by a stolen Amazon truck in South Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened around 2:15 p.m. on February 17, in the area of Woodlawn Avenue and 41st Place, near Gilbert Lindsay Recreation Center. Police said 37-year-old Christian Ramos Sanchez was driving the stolen Amazon truck at approximately 33 mph when he hit a parked car. He then drove to the area of East Street and South Main Street, where he struck Range and two other pedestrians.
Sanchez attempted to flee the area on foot, but was taken into custody shortly afterward, according to police. He was booked for felony hit-and-run on $85,000 bail.
Range suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was a 67-year-old San Pedro resident. He was a street vendor selling tools, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
The two other pedestrians suffered minor injuries in the crash.
An investigation into this fatality is ongoing.
