77-Year-Old Man Dies after Crash with Hit-and-Run Driver on Highway 99 in Fresno County

 
FRESNO COUNTY, CA (December 15, 2023) – John Ortiz was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Fresno County Monday afternoon on December 11.
 
The fatal crash happened around 3:00 p.m. on Highway 99. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Chrysler 200 sedan drifted on the highway for unknown reasons and struck a pickup truck. The impact caused the pickup to lose control and veer into the center divider.
 
John, a 77-year-old Selma resident, was a passenger in the pickup truck. Paramedics rushed him to Community Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
 
John’s wife was driving the pickup. It was unclear if she was hurt in the crash.
 
Meanwhile, the driver of the Chrysler took off after the crash.
 
John leaves behind children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would have been 78 years old on Christmas Day. He had just beat cancer and was heading home from his last round of chemo.
 
An investigation into this crash is ongoing. The CHP asked anyone with further information to call them at 559-705-2200.
