Head-On Crash near Gaviota Kills Two Lompoc Women, Goleta Man Arrested for DUI

 
GAVIOTA, CA (October 29, 2022)Jenna Causby and Dorothyann Guthrie died in a DUI head-on crash near Gaviota early Friday morning on October 28.
 
The fatal crash happened around 4:05 a.m. on Highway 1, approximately a mile west of Highway 101. According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, 22-year-old Kyle Nelson of Goleta drove a Ford C-Max southbound on Highway 1 when he started to overtake another car, driving into the northbound lane.
 
A Chevrolet Malibu heading northbound, trying to avoid the Ford, swerved into the second northbound lane. The Ford also moved into that lane and the two cars collided.
 
Both cars were engulfed in flames when officers arrived.
 
Causby was the driver of the Malibu and Guthrie was her passenger. Both died at the scene. They were both 20 years old from Lompoc.
 
Paramedics took Nelson to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.
 
Police later arrested Nelson on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to CHP. Officers say charges against Nelson are pending toxicology reports.
 
An investigation is underway.
