Wrong-Way Crash in San Jose Kills 1 and Injures 3
SAN JOSE, CA (May 24, 2023) – Jefferson Smith died in a wrong-way crash in San Jose Sunday afternoon on May 21.
The fatal crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on Leigh Avenue at Fruitdale Avenue. According to the San Jose Police Department, a man driving a white 2011 Toyota Corolla sedan entered the northbound lanes of Leigh Avenue heading the wrong way when he struck a 2012 Toyota Prius heading northbound at the intersection of Fruitdale Avenue.
Smith, a woman and a child were inside of the Prius when it was struck. He was the one driving the car. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The woman and the child were both taken to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries.
Meanwhile, the man driving Corolla also suffered life-threatening injuries.
Smith’s family says he is a native of San Jose del Guaviare in Colombia. He arrived in the United States only three months ago seeking to fulfill his dreams and the dreams of his loved ones. Now, his family is asking for donations to send Smith’s body home to Colombia for a Christian burial.
Police are still investigating the crash and criminal charges are still pending.
