Construction Worker Dies after Trench Collapses in San Francisco’s Lower Haight

 
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 30, 2023) – Javier Romero died in an industrial accident in San Francisco Thursday morning on September 28.
 
According to the San Francisco Fire Department, emergency crews responded in the area of Oak and Divisadero streets around 10:35 a.m. to rescue a construction worker after a trench collapsed under a sidewalk in San Francisco’s Lower Haight.
 
Romero became trapped under 8 feet of dirt. He died at the scene. He was 25 years old from Alameda County, according to the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office.
 
Romero was working on part of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Panhandle and Inner Sunset Large Sewer Rehabilitation Project.
 
The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is handling the investigation.
