UPDATE: Irais Hernandez-Mateo and Alexander Jiminez Injured in Fatal Head-On Crash on Highway 3 [Hayfork, CA]

Irais Hernandez-Mateo and Son Alexander Jiminez Hurt, One Killed in Head-On Accident on Highway 3 near Rourke Ranch Road

 
HAYFORK, CA (May 13, 2021) — 26-year-old Santa Cruz resident Irais Hernandez-Mateo and her 5-year-old son Alexander Jiminez sustained serious injuries in a fatal head-on crash Monday, May 10.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, an adult male drove a 2006 Honda S2000 northbound on Highway 3 south of Rourke Ranch Road in Trinity County. Hernandez-Mateo drove a 2017 Toyota 4Runner southbound on Highway 3, approaching the Honda.
 
For unknown reasons, the Honda veered over the double yellow lines to the southbound lane. As a result, the Honda crossed directly into the path of the Toyota. The front of the Toyota collided with the driver’s side of the Honda. After that, the Honda came to rest in the middle of Highway 3. However, the Toyota came to rest in the southbound traffic lane and right shoulder of Highway 3.
 
Trinity County Life Support, the Hayfork Volunteer Fire Department and CHP responded immediately. However, Fire and Emergency Medical personnel pronounced the male Honda driver dead at the scene. Police identified the victim as a 34-year-old Hayfork resident.
 
Paramedics transported the Toyota occupants – Hernandez-Mateo and Jiminez – by Trinity County Life Support. After that, officials airlifted them to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
 
DUI is being investigated as a possible cause of this collision.
