Good Samaritan Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver While Helping Crash Victims on 5 Freeway in Castella

 
CASTELLA, CA (October 9, 2023) — A Good Samaritan and several others suffered injuries in Friday’s hit-and-run accident on the 5 Freeway near Sweetbriar Avenue.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the hit-and-run crash stemmed from a previous car accident around 5:35 a.m. For an unknown reason, a 22-year-old driver drifted off the freeway and struck a tree, causing the tree to topple over.
 
Subsequently, a 56-year-old man saw the crash unfold and pulled over to help the occupants of the 2019 Toyota Highlander. However, during his attempt, a driver struck him and left.
 
Following that impact, a southbound 2022 Ford Ranger, driven by a 55-year-old male, struck the tree in the road.
 
As a result, the Good Samaritan suffered major injuries and sought care at Mercy Redding. Meanwhile, paramedics took the Toyota Highlander driver and passengers to Mercy Mount Shasta for treatment of minor injuries.
