2 Cars Crash after Teenage Drivers Allegedly Involved in Street Race in Fontana

FONTANA, CA (August 1, 2023) Fernando Gonzalez and Evan Cortez were involved in a street race crash in Fontana early Sunday morning on July 30.

According to the Fontana Police Department, officers spotted a white Toyota Camry and a white Dodge Charger engaging in a street race in the area of Catawba and Slover avenues around 2:13 a.m.

Officers initiated a traffic stop, but the two drivers continued speeding away south on Catawba Avenue.

Both drivers did not see the center divider at the intersection of Catawba and Jurupa avenues, causing both cars to crash into it at high speeds.

After the crash, the Camry then lost control and struck several vehicles parked at Catawba Avenue and Windcrest Drive.

Gonzalez, 19, and a minor passenger in the Camry, were detained without incident.

Cortez, 18, a minor passenger in the Charger, attempted to escape on foot after the crash. Authorities caught them a few blocks east of the crash site.

Paramedics transported both minors to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. The two were later released into their parents’ care.

Gonzalez and Cortez were also transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being taken into custody at West Valley Detention Center.

An investigation is ongoing.
