Maria Salas and Felipe Loera Killed, Fidel Artega Involved in Merced County Big Rig Crash

 
MERCED COUNTY, CA (October 18, 2021) — Police identified the two victims in a fatal big rig accident on Highway 152 near Volta Road on Sunday, October 10.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, around 6:05 a.m. a 1999 Honda Accord heading southbound on Volta Road crossed into the westbound lanes of Highway 152. As a result, the Honda collided with the trailer of a big rig traveling eastbound on Highway 152.
 
According to the CHP, it appears the Honda entered the eastbound traffic lane without yielding to the big rig. In addition, a witness stated that the Honda drove at a high rate of speed.
 
The Honda driver, 33-year-old Merced resident Felipe Molina Loera, and his 63-year-old female passenger from San Jose, Maria Chavez Salas, died in the crash.
 
50-year-old Fidel Soto Artega, the big rig driver, survived the crash in an unknown condition.
 
At this time, Los Banos-area CHP has no clue as to what led to the accident or if DUI played a factor. However, anyone with more information on this fatal accident should contact the CHP.
