Motorcyclist Dies after Colliding with Land Rover on Highway 12 near Southworth Road

 
SONORA, CA (April 26, 2023) – Douglas Smith Jr. was killed in a motorcycle accident in Sonora Saturday morning on April 22.
 
The accident happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Highway 12 near Southworth Road. According to the CHP, Smith was riding a 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycle west on the highway at a high rate of speed. He drove into the eastbound lane in an attempt to pass a 1995 Land Rover when he collided with the left side of the vehicle as it was making the left turn onto Southworth Road.
 
As a result, Smith suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was 50 years old from Valley Springs, according to the Calaveras County Coroner.
 
The driver of the Land Rover, 38-year-old Shawn Powers, also of Valley Springs, suffered major injuries and was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp for medical treatment.
 
CHP officials said alcohol or drugs was not a factor in the crash. An investigation is underway.
