David Smith Killed, Alan Reyes Arrested in DUI Accident on Highway 99 [Sacramento, CA]

Fatal Sacramento DUI Accident on Highway 99 near Florin Road

 
SACRAMENTO, CA (May 18, 2021) – David Jerome Smith was killed in a DUI accident early Saturday morning on Highway 99 in Sacramento.
 
The accident happened around 1:50 a.m. on May 15, just south of Florin Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Alan Reyes of Roseville was speeding on his truck in the far-right lane when he arrived upon slower moving traffic. Reyes deviated to the right and hit a sign and a chain-link fence. He then drifted back onto the road and struck the center divider.
 
As a result, a passenger in his vehicle was ejected onto the roadway.
 
Shortly after, Smith who was driving a van collided head-on with Reyes’ truck. At the same time, a 35-year-old Sacramento man driving an SUV swerved to avoid the crash but he struck the center divider and the passenger who was previously thrown off from Reyes’ truck.
 
Responding units pronounced Smith dead at the scene. He was a 31-year-old Sacramento resident.
 
Medics rushed the truck passenger to the hospital with critical injuries. Reyes sustained moderate injuries.
 
Police later arrested Reyes on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter charges.
 
An investigation into the accident is underway.
