Mother and 1-Year-Old Daughter Die after Crash with Intoxicated Driver in Sutter County
SUTTER COUNTY, CA (June 12, 2023) – Allyson Nohelia Navarro-Salazar and her 1-year-old baby died in a DUI head-on crash in Sutter County Friday night on June 9.
The fatal crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on Highway 99 at Pease Road. According to the CHP, an intoxicated driver was involved in a separate crash in the town of Live Oak. That suspect fled the scene and headed southbound on Highway 99.
At the same time, Navarro-Salazar was driving northbound on Highway 99.
The suspect crossed over the double yellow lines and side-swiped one vehicle before crashing head-on with Navarro-Salazar’s vehicle. After that, a fourth vehicle struck both Navarro-Salazar and the suspect’s vehicles.
Navarro-Salazar died at the scene. She was a 21-year-old Gridley resident, according to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office. Her 1-year-old daughter, Laylanie, also died at the scene.
A 23-year-old man from Gridley was a passenger in Navarro-Salazar’s vehicle. He suffered major injuries and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
The suspect suffered moderate injuries. The driver in the fourth vehicle had minor injuries.
Drugs and alcohol appear to have been factors in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
