Man Dies after Broadsided by Hit-and-Run Driver near 14th and Poplar Streets

 
OAKLAND, CA (August 21, 2022) – An 83-year-old man died in a hit-and-run crash near 14th Street and Poplar Street in West Oakland on Wednesday night.
 
The fatal crash happened around 6:10 p.m. on August 17. According to the Oakland Police Department, the victim was driving a 1996 Saturn SL eastbound in the 1300 block of 14th Street and attempted to make a northbound turn onto Poplar Street.
 
As he was making the turn, a 2013 Audi Q5 that was going westbound on 14th Street broadsided his car. The impact pushed the Saturn onto the curb and against a fence.
 
After the crash, the driver of the Audi fled the scene on foot.
 
The driver of the Saturn suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Authorities only identified him as an Oakland resident.
 
At this time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
 
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the Audi driver. They asked anyone with information to call them at 510-777-8570.
