72-Year-Old Karen Cooper Dies, Bag of Cement Hits Car on Highway 52 near 805 Freeway
SAN DIEGO, CA (June 1, 2023) — Karen Cooper died after a bag of cement from a truck that lost control crashed onto a car’s windshield on Highway 52 near the 805 Freeway.
According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, the fatal freak accident happened around 1:00 p.m. Friday. As 72-year-old Cooper, of La Jolla, was riding in an eastbound Mercedes-Benz SUV near San Clemente Park, a bag of cement suddenly crashed through the car’s windshield, hitting her.
Cooper suffered major injuries in the accident and died at the scene.
The drivers of the SUV and truck that was carrying construction materials stayed at the scene and reported no injuries. The truck driver informed traffic investigators that the pickup truck overturned after the load on his vehicle shifted on an elevated connector between 805 South Freeway and Highway 52 East.
Authorities have not confirmed the liabilities and other factors in this accident. However, they ruled out alcohol and drugs as possible factors. If anyone has seen this crash, please call the California Highway Patrol.
