Woman Dead, Child Hospitalized in Solo-Car Crash near 15 Freeway and University Avenue

 
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 23, 2024) — A woman died, and a child suffered major injuries after a car crashed near a drainage canal off the 15 freeway near University Avenue.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the single-car accident happened around 9:00 p.m. Sunday. Under unclear circumstances, a female driver of a Ford Fusion lost control on the southbound freeway and tumbled down an embankment. Shortly after, CHP officers and fire paramedics responded to find the mangled vehicle near the drainage canal below the interstate. Due to the car’s condition, they had to use the Jaws of Life to reach a 10-year-old boy and a deceased 63-year-old woman.
 
Following the crash, paramedics took the child to a hospital for treatment of major injuries. Authorities did not release the deceased woman’s name. However, her identity, as well as an investigation into whether DUI or speed factored into the cause, will be released following an investigation.
