2 CHP Officers Seriously Injured in Deadly Rear-End Accident on 5 Freeway in San Joaquin County

 
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA (March 24, 2021) – Three people died after a rear-end accident on 5 Freeway in San Joaquin County early Tuesday morning, March 23.
 
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on 5 Freeway south of Walnut Grove Road. According to Stockton Area CHP, two officers were assisting a disabled tractor-trailer along the southbound lanes of the freeway.
 
Moments later, a 2021 Subaru SUV veered off the roadway to the right, crashing into the rear of the patrol vehicle, CHP said. The impact sent the patrol vehicle into the dirt embankment. The Subaru then collided into a tree and caught fire.
 
As a result, the three people inside the Subaru died at the scene.
 
The two officers were flown to a local hospital with major injuries.
 
CHP is still investigating the accident. It is unknown whether drugs and/or alcohol were factors.
