2 Students Hurt After Driver Crashes Into School Bus on Highway 20 in Sutter County

SUTTER COUNTY, CA (February 26, 2024) — Two students and a driver suffered minor injuries in a school bus accident on Highway 20 at Tarke Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the school bus crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Under foggy weather conditions, a school bus driver for the Meridian School District turned on the fog strobe lights for increased safety. Subsequently, the bus driver tried turning left onto westbound Highway 20 from South Tarke Road. However, an eastbound 2014 Ford Fusion moving about 60 mph in the 55 mph zone crashed into the left side of the bus.

As a result, an 11-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy on board the bus, along with the Ford Fusion driver, suffered minor injuries and were brought to Adventist Health and Rideout Hospital.

According to authorities, the Ford driver could not stop in time with the estimated 200 feet of visibility just before the impact.

Information surrounding where the fault lies requires further investigation.

Remember to slow down when driving in inclement weather. California draws in heavy fog, torrential rain and black ice. Adjust your speed and space accordingly. You never know when you may run into another oncoming vehicle.
