2 Dead, Tree Falls onto Truck, Causes Multi-Car Crash on Highway 99 in Visalia

 
VISALIA, CA (January 13, 2023) — Two people died after a eucalyptus tree fell onto a truck and caused a multi-car accident on Highway 99 near Betty Drive.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal multi-vehicle crash happened around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. For what witnesses say was due to a lightning strike, a eucalyptus tree fell onto the northbound lanes of Highway 99 and slammed into a red pickup truck. The man inside that truck suffered fatal injuries.
 
Following that, several vehicles also crashed into the tree, including a motorcycle driven by a 58-year-old man from Cutler who suffered fatal injuries, as well. Officials have yet to release the victims’ names pending notification of family members.
 
The other drivers and passengers involved in the crash reported only minor injuries or no injuries at all.
 
Authorities responded to the scene and found several cars piled up, and only one lane of traffic reopened around 8:15 a.m.
 
At this time, authorities will look into the factors that led to the crash. But it seems the roads were wet at the time of the crash. If anyone has more information, please reach out to the CHP.
