Innocent Bicyclist Dies after Struck by Suspect Vehicle During Pursuit in South LA

 
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA (April 24, 2024) – Jose Monsalve Rojas was fatally struck by a vehicle during a police chase in South Los Angeles Wednesday morning on April 24.
 
The fatal crash happened around 6:15 a.m. after a brief pursuit that led to the area of Hooper Avenue and 45th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
 
LAPD Newton Area officers received a radio call of a theft that was being followed by the victim of that theft. Officers responded to the area and tried to stop the suspect vehicle, but it continued on.
 
As the suspect tried to run away from police, he struck Rojas who was riding his bicycle at the intersection. He then struck multiple vehicles before flipping over at Hooper Avenue and 45th Street.
 
The suspect then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee, but was immediately detained.
 
Rojas suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was 46 years old, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s Office.

An investigation into this fatality is ongoing.
