Wrong-Way Driver Dies after Colliding Head-On into Big Rig on 5 Freeway in Redding

 
REDDING, CA (January 15, 2022) – A wrong-way driver died in a head-on accident on 5 Freeway in Redding, early Friday morning.
 
The accident happened around 1:00 a.m. on January 14 just north of South Bonnyview Road. CHP officials said a woman was driving a sedan northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway. She then collided head-on into an oncoming big rig.
 
As a result of the crash, both the sedan and the big rig burst into flames.
 
Responding officers found the driver of the sedan trapped inside the burning car and pronounced her dead at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, the 43-year-old driver of the semi sustained minor injuries. Paramedics took them to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for further treatment. The rig’s passenger was uninjured and did not require further treatment.
 
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
