Woman Dies after Crash with Wrong-Way Hit-and-Run Driver on Highway 24 in Oakland

 
OAKLAND, CA (May 23, 2022) – A woman was killed in a wrong-way hit-and-run on Highway 24 in Oakland, early Saturday morning on May 21.
 
The fatal crash happened around 2:00 a.m. near Shattuck Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a Mercedes-Benz was traveling the wrong way on the highway when he collided head-on with a Mazda sedan.
 
After the crash, the wrong-way driver tried to escape through the bushes of the highway.
 
The female driver of the Mazda suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. However, she has not been identified at this time.
 
Four other passengers in the Mazda sustained life-threatening injuries.
 
Multiple officers and a dog searched for and found the suspect, who is now in custody.
 
Police suspect alcohol played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.
