Suspected Alcohol Intoxication Leads to Deadly Head-On Crash on Highway 65 in Bakersfield

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (February 15, 2023) – A woman died and Lucy Martinez was injured after a DUI head-on crash on Highway 65 in Bakersfield Tuesday on February 14.
 
The fatal crash happened just north of Famoso Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, 53-year-old William Pederson was driving a 2022 Dodge Ram at approximately 55 mph on the highway. For unknown reasons, he crossed over double yellow lines into lanes headed south and collided head-on into a Toyota, driven by the victim.
 
The impact caused Pederson’s Ram to overturn several times.
 
The woman driving the Toyota suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. She was a 53-year-old Bakersfield resident.
 
Martinez, a 50-year-old Bakersfield resident, was riding with the victim. Paramedics took her to Kern Medical with moderate injuries.
 
Meanwhile, Pederson only had minor wounds.
 
Driving while under the influence is suspected in this crash, but CHP did not indicate who is accused of being intoxicated.
 
The Bakersfield CHP office urged witnesses to call them at 661-396-6600.
