Modesto Woman Dies after Struck by Hit-and-Run Suspect During Assault on Highway 99

 
MODESTO, CA (February 18, 2024) – A woman was hit and killed by a car during an assault on Highway 99 in central Modesto Friday evening on February 16.
 
The fatality happened around 8:50 p.m. along the northbound highway off-ramp at Sixth Street. According to the Modesto Police Department, a vehicle was heading north when it turned onto the central Modesto exit and struck the woman.
 
Witnesses told officers that the woman was screaming before she was struck by the vehicle.
 
Emergency responders performed CPR on the woman before taking her to a hospital.
 
Despite life-saving efforts at the hospital, the woman did not survive and was declared dead.
 
Police later learned the victim was assaulted and the suspects took off from the scene.

Around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, a 32-year-old Ceres man turned himself in.

The suspect and the victim appeared to be involved in a relationship, police said. The suspect was booked into jail on homicide and domestic violence charges.
