Woman Killed in 2-Car Crash on Highway 99 in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA (September 12, 2023) — A woman died in a 2-car accident on Highway 99 near Sherwood Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly 2-car crash happened Sunday around 5:17 a.m. For an unknown reason, a 23-year-old Bakersfield woman stopped her northbound 2014 Chevrolet in the No. 2 lane. Her vehicle’s headlamps were not turned on at this point.

Subsequently, a 43-year-old woman piloting a northbound 2019 GMC in the No. 2 lane did not see her vehicle ahead. As a result, the GMC, traveling about 70 mph, struck the rear of the Chevrolet, causing both cars to career off the road.

Moments later, paramedics rushed to the scene but pronounced the Chevrolet driver deceased on arrival. Authorities learned that the woman was not wearing a seat belt during the impact.

Authorities do not know why the Chevrolet driver stopped on the road or if impairment played a role. However, an ongoing investigation should reveal more details.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of the victim.
