Three Vehicles Collide on Highway 86 in Salton City Killing 2 People

 
SALTON CITY, CA (April 9, 2023) – Two people died in a three-vehicle accident on Highway 86 in Salton City Monday afternoon on April 3.
 
The fatal accident happened around 3:32 p.m., just north of the Border Patrol checkpoint. According to the California Highway Patrol, a semi truck, driven by a 58-year-old Fresno resident, rear-ended a vehicle for unknown reasons. The impact forced the vehicle to hit a 2023 Peterbilt traveling in front of it.
 
The vehicle then caught fire after the crash. Both the driver and passenger died at the scene.
 
The Peterbilt was driven by a 60-year-old El Centro resident, who was unharmed.
 
Both the drivers of the semi were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. It was unknown whether the occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seatbelts.
 
Authorities said impairment was not a factor in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
