Police Arrest Woman for DUI after Deadly Crash on 5 Freeway in Carlsbad

 
CARLSBAD, CA (January 14, 2024) – Two people died in a DUI crash on 5 Freeway near McClellan-Palomar Airport early Saturday morning on January 13.
 
The fatal crash happened around 4:40 a.m. just north of Palomar Airport Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, 28-year-old Angela Hays from Corona was driving a Hyundai sedan at high speeds when she collided with a Jeep SUV. The impact caused the SUV to overturn.
 
Subsequently, a Nissan sedan traveling on the High Occupancy lane collided head-on with the overturned Jeep.
 
As a result, a female passenger of the Jeep died at the scene. The male driver later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Both were Richmond residents.
 
The male driver of the Nissan was transported to a local area hospital with major non-life-threatening injuries.

Police arrested Hays at the scene on charges of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. They booked her into the Vista Detention Facility.
