FRESNO, CA (March 22, 2021) – Three people were killed in a fiery accident at Cedar Avenue and McKinley Avenue in Central Fresno late Saturday evening, March 20.

The Fresno Police Department said a sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull-over 20-year-old Francisco Portillo after he witnessed him driving erratically in his Chevrolet Camaro. Portillo sped away and ran a red light at McKinley and First Street.

The pursuit only lasted a few seconds before the deputy called off the chase for safety reasons.

Portillo kept going, hitting speeds of over 100 miles per hour. He then slammed into seven vehicles. After the impact, five vehicles caught fire, authorities said.

Three adults died at the scene. One is a man who was in a car by himself. The other two are women who were in a car together. They were not yet identified.

Portillo, Portillo’s girlfriend, and another passenger were all taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Portillo could face at least three charges of vehicular manslaughter. Officers are also trying to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the crash.
