Steven Etherington Dead, Christopher Leighton Injured after Johnson Valley OHV Area Crash

JOHNSON VALLEY, CA (March 27, 2024) – Authorities identified 43-year-old Steven Etherington of Lake Elsinore as the passenger killed in an off-roading accident near King of the Hammers, Saturday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on February 3, at about 7:00 p.m. A Polaris reportedly drove over a dune in the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle became airborne and overturned multiple times.

Emergency crews transported the driver, identified as 43-year-old Christopher Leighton, and a 16-year-old female passenger to Desert Regional Medical Center. They sustained moderate to major injuries.

A third passenger, Etherington, was reportedly not wearing a harness. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP Morongo Basin Station believes that alcohol was a factor in the fatal accident. Officers will release additional information once it becomes available.
