Fatal Police Chase Accident in Fresno

 
FRESNO, CA (March 17, 2021) – A man was killed in a fiery accident at Bullard Avenue and West Avenue Thursday afternoon, March 11.
 
The Fresno County Coroner’s office identified the fatal victim as 48-year-old Robert Makoni of Oceanside.
 
Around 3:15 p.m., the Fresno Police Department received an emergency call from someone who spotted a driver passed out behind the wheel of a utility van.
 
When officers arrived, they found the man in the driver’s seat, asleep inside of the van with his foot on the brake. The man was compliant at first but ended up taking off, speeding away from officers.
 
Officers tried to pull the van over, but they pulled back so as to not endanger people on the roads.
 
The van ended up slamming into a grey car after running a red light at Bullard Avenue and West Avenue. The impact caused the van to roll over and hit a tree, before exploding into flames.
 
The driver of the van – Robert Makoni – died at the scene. The driver of the car that was hit by the van in the intersection was unharmed.
 
Officers shut down the area for about 8 hours while they investigated.
