Driver Dies after Hit by Big Rig on Highway 88 in Stockton

STOCKTON, CA (May 20, 2023) – One person was killed in a big rig accident on Highway 88 in Stockton Tuesday morning on May 16.

The fatal accident happened around 11:45 a.m. at the intersection with Alpine Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the big rig carrying 68 live cattles was traveling eastbound on the highway. At the same time, a Toyota SUV was heading northbound on Alpine approaching the intersection.

The big rig was approaching a yellow light, and the light had just turned green for the SUV. Both vehicles came into the intersection when the big rig hit the left side of the car and rolled onto its right side with the Toyota under the cattle trailer.

As a result, the driver of the SUV suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The victim was the only occupant of the car. They were not yet identified.

Meanwhile, the driver of the big rig only had minor injuries.

First responders had to rip open the trailer to remove the livestock with the help of cattlemen at the scene. A veterinarian was at the scene to determine if any cattle needed to be euthanized.

Police said drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be a factor in the crash. An investigation is underway.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
