Girl Dead, Two Other Children Hospitalized after DUI Crash on 15 Freeway near Gopher Canyon Road
ESCONDIDO, CA (July 15, 2021) — A young girl suffered fatal injuries in a DUI accident on 15 Freeway on Wednesday, July 14.
According to the California Highway Patrol, they received a call at around 2:25 a.m. about the incident.
Reports said that a 27-year-old woman drove a 2009 Hyundai Genesis with a dog and three children inside. Then she veered off northbound 15 Freeway near Gopher Canyon Road.
CHP said in a news release that the vehicle went down an embankment and flipped. The car ended up at least 150 feet down the hillside.
The dog and the 5-year-old girl died at the scene. Medics rushed the driver, 1-year-old boy, and 3-year-old girl to the hospital with serious injuries. CHP said the impact ejected the 5-year-old and 3-year-old girls from the vehicle.
CHP suspects alcohol as a factor in the accident. They said the driver faces multiple charges including felony DUI causing death.
Officials issued a SigAlert around 3:05 a.m. that closed the right two lanes on northbound 15 Freeway. They reopened all lanes in the area by 8 a.m.
