Neftali Saenz Detained, 5-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized in Rollover Crash on 5 Freeway near Lyons Avenue

SANTA CLARITA, CA (March 16, 2023) Neftali Saenz faces felony child endangerment charges following a rollover accident on the 5 Freeway near Lyons Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office, the two-vehicle crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. Sunday. Under unclear circumstances, Neftali Acevedo Saenz’s Honda CRV crashed into the left rear of a Toyota 4Runner.

The impact caused the Honda CRV to overturn and eject a 7-year-old girl in the vehicle who was sharing a seatbelt with her sibling.

Authorities do not know which car made an unsafe lane change prior to the impact, however.

Following the accident, emergency personnel brought the juvenile to Northridge Hospital with major injuries. At the scene, officers arrested 35-year-old Saenz, of Bakersfield, at the scene for felony child endangerment charges. It is illegal to share a seatbelt in California, Josh Greengard confirmed in the reports.

Thus far, officers do not believe impairment played a factor in the accident, but if anyone has more to add, please call Officer Nichols at (661) 600-1600.

It’s critical to use seatbelts the way manufacturers designed them: for one occupant at a time. Seatbelts save lives and can prevent catastrophic injuries if used properly. Above all, drive carefully and be alert. Keep safe and defensive driving tips in practice when driving.
