Natalia Mesa Hurt, Another Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 1 near San Antonio Road

VANDERNERG AFB, CA (July 28, 2022) — One person died and Natalia Mesa, 21, of Santa Maria, were hurt in a head-on crash on Thursday, July 28.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the incident happened at around 7:40 a.m. on Highway 1 on Vandenberg Space Force Base. It involved a motorcycle and a GMC Yukon SUV near San Antonio Road and Firefighter Road.

The crash happened when the SUV driven by Mesa traveled north in the right-hand lane at 60-70 mph. Then the SUV veered across the dirt center median, said California Highway Patrol Officer Keith Rogers. After that, it crashed head-on into a southbound motorcycle riden by a Santa Maria man.

The impact of the collision ejected the rider from the motorcycle. He hit the SUV, and then he ended up down an embankment off the roadway, Rogers said.

The motorcycle reportedly caught fire after the collision. Then it subsequently crashed into the front of a Lincoln Navigator driven by Amalia Solorio, 65, of Santa Maria.

The motorcycle rider died at the scene. His identity was not immediately available pending notification of loved ones.

Medics rushed Mesa by AMR ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria with major injuries.

Rogers said alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
