Police Arrest Hit-and-Run Suspect after Crash in Merced County Killing Motorcycle Rider

 
MERCED COUNTY, CA (July 27, 2023) – A motorcyclist died in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 140 in Merced County Monday evening on July 24.
 
The fatal crash happened around 10:00 p.m. near the intersection with Buhach Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Luis Diego Diaz Romero of Atwater was driving a Nissan Sentra on the highway when he attempted to make a left turn onto southbound Buhach Road.
 
At the same time, a man was riding his Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on the highway approaching the Nissan. The motorcycle struck the Nissan, ejecting the rider on the westbound lane of the highway.
 
Moments later, a 20-year-old Merced woman driving a Ford Mustang westbound on Highway 140 ran over the rider.
 
The motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was not yet identified.

The driver of the Ford stopped after the crash.

Officers said Romero fled the scene on foot but was located at his residence a short time later. They arrested him and booked him at the Merced County Jail for felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, with bail set at just over 20-thousand dollars.

Further investigation is underway.
