Mario Lares Killed, Ana Hernandez Seriously Injured in Police Pursuit on South Vineland Road [Bakersfield, CA]

Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle in Bakerfield Kills Man and Badly Injures Woman

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 22, 2023) – Mario Lares died and Ana Hernandez was seriously injured during a police pursuit in Bakersfield early Thursday morning.
 
The fatal crash happened just after 2:21 a.m. at South Vineland Road and Muller Road. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the crash occurred as officers were in pursuit of a driver in a reported stolen tan GMC Sierra.
 
After the pursuit ended, dispatchers received a call about a crash involving a Bakersfield police patrol and a Honda Accord.
 
Lares, a 31-year-old Bakersfield resident, was the one driving the Honda. Hernandez was his 34-year-old passenger, also from Bakersfield.
 
Lares died in the crash. Hernandez suffered serious injuries. She underwent two surgeries for orthopedic fractures and internal organ injuries.
 
One BPD officer had moderate injuries while the other had major injuries, the CHP said.
 
There were no witnesses to the actual crash. The CHP asked anyone with information to call their office at 661-396-6600.
