Carjacking Suspect Strikes Pedestrian During Chase on Vermont Avenue in West Carson

 
WEST CARSON, CA (January 12, 2024) – Maria Salazar was struck by a car during chase in West Carson area Thursday afternoon on January 11.
 
The chase began just before 1:00 p.m. after a report of a suspected DUI driver and carjacking. The driver entered a parking structure at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance. About the same time, another carjacking was reported in the same general area involving a Prius.
 
Torrance police spotted the stolen Prius and chased the driver for about four miles.
 
The driver was speeding on the wrong side of the street before the Prius hopped a curb and knocked down a pole.
 
The police SUV then rammed the Prius from behind. The impact caused the Prius to strike Salazar, who was crossing the street at Vermont Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard.
 
Salazar, 66, was knocked to the ground. Fortunately, she escaped serious injuries. Paramedics treated her at the scene and released her.
 
Meanwhile, the suspect ran from the Prius. However, police were able to catch him and arrest him at a nearby Carl’s Jr restaurant.
 
Further investigation is underway.
