DUI Wrong-Way Driver Causes Deadly Crash on Highway 198 in Kings County

 
KINGS COUNTY, CA (August 8, 2023) Maria Aguerralde was killed in a DUI crash in Kings County Sunday morning on August 6.
 
The fatal crash happened around 11:30 a.m. on Highway 198, just west of 27th Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, 65-year-old Mariano Najar Martinez of Huron was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on the highway at approximately 70 to 80 mph. At the same time, Aguerralde was driving a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 eastbound at approximately 55 mph.
 
Najar Martinez turned his vehicle to the left and was traveling the wrong way, approaching the Chevrolet until the vehicles collided.
 
As a result of the crash, Aguerralde suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. She was 82 years old from Huron. Her passenger, 53-year-old Julia Mendoza of Huron, was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
 
Officers arrested Najar Martinez on suspicion of driving under the influence.
