Man Dies in Wrong-Way Fiery Collision on Highway 101 in Sonoma County

 
SONOMA COUNTY, CA (July 17, 2023) — A man died in a wrong-way fiery crash on Highway 101 near Dutcher Creek Road.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly two-vehicle collision happened around 9:44 p.m. Thursday. For an unknown, a driver in a Nissan Sentra was heading southbound in the northbound lane. Police officers received calls about the wrong-way driver who crashed his vehicle minutes later into a northbound GMC Yukon.
 
Upon responding, emergency personnel found two vehicles with major damage. Both cars reportedly caught fire, trapping both drivers in their respective vehicles.
 
The driver of the GMC Yukon, described as a 45-year-old man from Cloverdale, suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries. Paramedics airlifted him to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
 
The wrong-way driver, a Cloverdale man, suffered fatal injuries. The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner’s office has yet to release his name pending notification of family members.
 
Following the crash, crews issued a SigAlert around 10:21 p.m. for both southbound lanes. Authorities do not have more information on the factors that led to the wrong-way collision. However, those with information can call the Santa Rosa CHP office at 707-588-1400.
