Scooter Rider Dies after Hit by Pickup Truck on Highway 62 in Joshua Tree

 
JOSHUA TREE, CA (March 30, 2023) – A 35-year-old man was killed in a scooter accident on Highway 62 in Joshua Tree Saturday evening on March 25.
 
The fatal accident happened around 9:40 p.m. near Border Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was riding a 2021 Yongfu scooter eastbound in the left lane at slow speeds.
 
At the same time, 47-year-old Aiki Cavannaugh from Landers was driving a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup truck in the east bound lane of the highway. He then struck the rear of the scooter.
 
The scooter rider was rushed to Hi Desert Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He was a Long Beach resident.
 
Cavannaugh stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers.
 
Officers said the scooter was not legal for highway use.
 
The CHP is still investigating the crash. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs was a factor.
